Marsala

our wines

Marsala is a Liqueur wine of Denomination of Controlled Origin (DOC) produced in Sicily, in the municipality of Marsala and the entire province of Trapani, excluding the municipalities of Pantelleria, Favignana and Alcamo.

The history of Marsala wine dates back several centuries ago when the English merchant
John Woodhouse, arriving in 1733 with the ship on which he was traveling in the port of Marsala, discovered the wine produced in the area, which was aged in wooden barrels assuming a similar taste the Spanish and Portuguese wines very popular at that time in England. In fact the British knew the wines of Marsala for several decades, because of the number of the port of Marsala where they used to stock up on supplies, water, food and, in fact, wines.
The aging method used by Marsala, called in
perpetuum, was to top up the barrels that contained some of the wine consumed in the year with the new production of wine. The wine so treated liked it so much that Woodhouse decided to load as fifty barrels, adding it but with wine spirit, in order to increase the alcohol content and to preserve the characteristics during the journey. It was a success, so that Woodhouse decided to return to Sicily and begin our production and marketing, using the aging method soleras, already known in Portugal and in Spain for the production of Porto and Sherry, respectively (method that still Today our company uses to produce label Marsala Vergine Soleras).

Today among the most popular wines Marsala there are the following types:

  • Marsala Fine with minimum aging of a year
  • Marsala Superiore with minimum aging of two years
  • Marsala Superiore Riserva with minimum aging of four years
  • Marsala Vergine and / or Soleras with minimum aging of five years
  • Marsala Vergine and / or Soleras Stravecchio and Virgin and / or Soleras Reserve with aging minimum of ten years

Vinimar produces and markets three different labels, all DOC:

  • Marsala Superiore Ambra Semi Dry DOC, aged naturally in small oak barrels for over two years
  • Garibaldi Marsala Superiore Ambra Dolce DOC, aged naturally in small oak barrels for over two years
  • Marsala Fine Ambra Semi Dry DOP, aged naturally in small oak barrels for over two years
